It all started in 1952 when Nathan Swartz bought a half interest in the Abington Shoe Company in Abington, Massachusetts. Within 3 years in 1955, he bought the remaining interest in the company. In the 60’s the Swartz family introduced injection-moulding technology to the footwear industry. Which was the revolutionary start to leather uppers without stitching as the soles were fused to it producing a truly waterproof boot and shoe. In the 70’s the brand name ‘Timberland’ was developed and the company renamed. Also during the 70’s the first hand sewn casual shoe and the boat shoe were made. In the 80’s the company went global, exporting initially to Italy, then going public on the American stock exchange and finally they partnered with City Year Inc, the Boston-based youth “urban peace corps” to support community service. The 90’s were the start of the Women’s range and many more new designs and the company switched to the New York Stock Exchange. The company grew from strength to strength, winning numerous awards including top 100 companies to work for amongst many others. In 2006 the Company set a new standard for product transparency and increased its efforts to minimise environmental impact by introducing new, environmentally-friendlier packaging for its footwear products and a “nutritional label” a product information label that details aspects of the company's environmental and community footprint. Timberland continues to prosper till date.
