The global infatuation with Baby Yoda, or Grogu, to give him his official name, has been so strong that many people will have forgotten there was an adult Yoda! However, German footwear brand Adidas is here to remind us all of the OG little green Jedi with a pair of Stan Smith sneakers inspired by Yoda, which will go on sale soon for $120, or around £90.
Live Kindly reports that the Yoda-themed sneakers are part of the Stan Smith Forever range, making use of its Primegreen fabrics, which Adidas says is made from 50 per cent recycled materials.
The Yoda version is also green in another way. The back heels of the shoes have Yoda’s face embossed in green fabric, and the tongues of both shoes feature illustrations: on one, Yoda, and the other, Stan Smith himself.
Adidas introduced Primegreen last year alongside Primeblue, which uses recycled Parley ocean plastic, and is part of Adidas’ commitment to begin using at least 50 per cent recycled materials as of last year. By 2024, the brand plans on eliminating virgin plastics and polyester from all of its products, meaning we’ll see a lot more Primegreen and Primeblue across the board.
The Yoda Stan Smiths have a quote printed on the sides of the shoes, one that even those not as familiar with the Star Wars franchise will recognise: ‘Do or do not, there is no try’, the Jedi sensei’s words of advice to then novice Jedi Luke Skywalker. A certain rival footwear brand might shorten that to ‘Just Do it’.
The shoe is part of a long collaboration between Star Wars and Adidas, and come hot on the heels of a Stan Smith x Disney Collection by Adidas Originals, which feature silhouettes inspired by several characters from Disney. This includes motifs borrowed from franchises such as Pixar, Star Wars, The Muppets, and Marvel.
The characters highlighted in the new Stan Smith x Disney Collection include The Hulk, Yoda, and Kermit the Frog. Disney characters, Wall-E, Tinker Bell from Peter Pan and Mike Wazowski, from Monsters, Inc. also feature in the collection.
However, one peculiar thing about the new sneaker is that Yoda doesn’t even wear shoes, always appearing barefoot throughout the Star Wars films and animated series. The same can be said for Baby Yoda/Grogu, and the only other member of their species seen in the franchise, Yaddle, all of whom prefer to let their three-toed feet feel unconstrained.
Yoda certainly doesn’t seem like a sneakerhead. Or, a sneakerhead, Yoda seems like not, as the little dude would himself say.
As for that other little dude, if you’re missing the unexpected star of The Mandalorian, Adidas also released a pair of Baby Yoda Superstars last year as part of a collection of shoes inspired by the show, including the Superstar, NMD, ZX 2K Boost, Gazelle, Top Ten Hi, and Nizza Beskar Steel, taking inspiration from Baby Yoda, Mando, the Armorer, and the legendary Darksaber.
The Yoda Stan Smith sneakers come out not on Star Wars Day, 4 May (‘May the fourth be with you!’), but on 5 May (Revenge Of The Fifth!).
