The Most Iconic Trainers In Film

The lockdown imposed by the coronavirus pandemic means we’ve all got extra time to start on that back catalogue of films we all should have watched, but never gotten around to. Sneakerheads take note, as well look at some of the most iconic on-screen trainer moments.
We can all be influenced by seeing our favourite stars and the trainers they choose to wear, whether it’s sports stars, or movie stars, Uma Thurman's Onitsuka Tigers in Kill Bill or a teenage Leonardo DiCaprio in Chuck Taylors in 1995 coming-of-age movie Basketball Diaries, we have some of our favourites here.

Forrest Gump (1994)
Based on the novel by Winston Groom, and directed by Robert Zemeckis, Forrest Gump earned Tom Hanks his second Best Actor Academy Award, and created an iconic moment for Nike, with its Cortez shoe almost stealing the limelight.
The Nike Cortez was released in 1972, designed by Olympic track coach Bill Bowerman, with the aim of being the first modern running shoe. Hanks wears the OG white-varsity royal-varsity red colourway, as a present from Jenny.

Do The Right Thing (1989)
Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing was released in 1989 and was instantly a hit with early sneakerheads. Lee himself had fallen for a pair of Jordans, even wearing them to the Oscars, and Do The Right Thing is littered with leather, box-fresh gems.
The Air Jordan IVs are the film’s big hitters. The Tinker Hatfield-designed Jordan IV is a mid-top sneaker that featured a nubuck upper, mesh side panels and a unique triangular plastic piece attached to the heel connected to a plastic lace lock.

Back To The Future Part II (1989)
The Air Mag was designed by Tinker Hatfield for the movie, notably when Doc Brown and Marty McFly travel forward to 2015. Featuring self-fastening laces and light-up panels, they were unlike anything seen before.

When Nike and Hatfield decided to make the trainers a reality in 2011, they were hugely popular and now sit as some of the most expensive kicks on the planet (you only need a cool £13,079 to own a pair).

He Got Game (1998)
He Got Game is another Spike Lee celebration of sneakers. Featuring Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Lows, Nike Air More Uptempo, Air Foamposite One “Royal” and Total Max Uptempo, to name a few, the Air Jordan XIII even has its own scene.
When Jake Shuttleworth (Denzel Washington) made his way to the sneaker store, there was only one pair of trainers he, and everyone watching was after. The Air Jordan XIII had only released a matter of weeks earlier and credit goes to Lee for getting them in the film so quickly.

Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003)
A cinematic great, Kill Bill: Volume 1 is Quentin Tarantino's fourth film. Starring Uma Thurman as a The Bride, seeking revenge on her former hit squad, the film also has another major star: the Onitsuka Tiger Tai Chi LE.
This bright yellow design matches Thurman's beehive-ready yellow-and-black two-piece and has since become some of the most famous trainers on the big screen. Oh, and they have “Fuck U” moulded onto the soles. Iconic.
