Kid Cudi Wears Virgil Abloh Designed Nike Sneakers At SAG Awards

American rapper and actor Kid Cudi attended the recent Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards in a pair of Nike x Off-White sneakers designed by the late Virgil Abloh on Sunday 27 February at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.

Footwear News reports that the evening’s SAG Awards red carpet was dominated by form-fitting suits by Gucci, Dior, and Brunello Cucinelli, and black ties all around, but slick tailoring aside, it was Kid Cudi’s outfit that won the night.

The rapper-turned-actor was recently starring in the Netflix film ‘Don’t Look Up’, and was attending the awards with fellow cast members Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio, who were all up for the ‘Outstanding Performance By A Cast’ award.

Cudi struck a pose on the red carpet in a Louise Vuitton crystal-embroidered black suit, which was not totally surprising, given the rapper’s close relationship with the late Virgil Abloh, who was the fashion brand’s creative designer.

Kid Cudi was part of Abloh’s debut fashion show in 2017 and took part in the recent ‘Farewell Virgil’ show in Miami, where he performed ‘Moon’ as a tribute to the late fashion designer.

He has been dressed by Abloh on many occasions, notably wearing an Off-White tulle gown on US comedy show Saturday Night Live in April 2021, and a multicoloured LV fit to the 2021 Met Gala.

For the SAG Awards, Cudi, who is actually called Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, wore a pair of Nike x Off-White Air Jordan One Sneakers, which had been designed by Abloh, and are some of the rarest sneakers to have been created in recent years.

The Off-White Air Jordans are now changing hands on resale sites for over £10,000, and some sizes are commanding more than £50,000. If you take a UK size 12.5, then you’d need to find £100,000!

The Off-White Air Jordans are part of ‘The Ten’, a collaborative project between Abloh and Nike, which went on sale in 2017. The project saw Abloh reconstruct 10 iconic Nike footwear silhouettes.

The Nike x Off-White Air Jordans took on the ‘Chicago Red’ colourway, which is particularly relevant to sneakerheads, as this colourway was first used on the first-ever Air Jordan 1s in 1985, and were designed for wear by Michael Jordan during his time playing for the Chicago Bulls.

Abloh is one of the first Nike collaborators to be given a license to update the shoes.

Abloh's Nike sneakers remain largely the same as those original shoes but come with signature Off-White detailing. Helvetica typeface wording on the outer reads ‘Off-White for Nike x Air Jordan 1" Beaverton, Oregon, USA’, while scarlet zip ties, which Abloh introduced on his own Off-White sneakers in 2014, were attached to the lace holes.

The sneakers sold-out instantly upon their original release in November 2017, and since they have been seen on the feet of A$AP Rocky, Luka Sabatt, Kim Jones and, now, Kid Cudi.
